Duke head coach Alex Beguinet enters his
19th season at the helm of the Duke program. Beguinet has compiled a 203-291
(.411) overall record in 17 years. The 49-year old native of France came to
Duke after serving as the head fencing coach at Lewis & Clark College in
Portland, Ore. for eight years.
Beguinet also served at the Junior
Olympic Training Camp as a staff member from 1977-80 and again from 1983-88.
He is currently a member of the United States Fencing Association coaching
staff.
Beguinet has lectured at USFA
national coaches' seminars and clinics and was the director of Salle La
Bossiere in Portland from 1980-84. He instructed for the city of Portland's
Park Bureau for eight years and coached for Clark College in Vancouver,
Wash., Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore., and Portland Community
College.
Beguinet has participated as a coach
at the fencing events for seven Olympic Festivals, while he has also been a
coach for several International Cadet Championships and World Championships.
Born in Toulouse, France, Maitre
Beguinet received his Master of Arms Degree from the National Sports
Institute in Paris in 1976.
He has helped 38 Blue Devils reach
the national tournament and coached one national champion at Duke, that
coming in 1996 when Jeremy Kahn secured the epee title.
